Vidarbha fast bowler Yash Thakur broke Mumbai’s threatening opening partnership between Prithvi Shaw and Bhupen Lalwani by accounting for the latter’s downfall in their high-octane 2024 Ranji Trophy final clash.

Thakur’s timely breakthrough ended up triggering Mumbai’s top-order collapse at the Wankhede Stadium, as the hosts slipped from 81-0 to 99-4 in the space of just eight overs.

Yash Thakur, tasked by Vidarbha captain Akshay Wadkar to bowl the 15th over of the innings, struck in the third over of his opening spell by accounting for the key wicket of well-set Mumbai opener Bhupen Lalwani.

Thakur had sent down a fullish delivery outside off-stump, before the ball brushed Lalwani’s outside edge to be safely pouched by the Vidarbha wicketkeeper.


Soon after Bhupen Lalwani’s dismissal, Vidarbha spinner Harsh Dubey trapped Prithvi Shaw and number three batsman Musheer Khan in quick succession. India’s all-format star and Mumbai’s middle-order stalwart Shreyas Iyer also failed to make an impact on his domestic return as he was done-in by a short delivery from senior Vidarbha fast bowler Umesh Yadav.

Yash Thakur, meanwhile, has been in scintillating touch with the ball for Vidarbha off late. The 25-year-old has already seized 22 wickets this 2024 Ranji Trophy season in just 12 innings, which included his twin match-winning spells against Madhya Pradesh in the semifinals.

Thakur will soon be seen turning up for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise in the forthcoming IPL 2024 season. The young speedster was retained by the LSG team management back in November 2023 as part of their IPL 2024 squad combination.
