Young fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana suffered a hamstring niggle during Sri Lanka’s second T20I match of their recently-concluded series against Bangladesh.

As per a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), he sustained a Grade 1 hamstring injury on his left leg while bowling against Bangladesh and the setback will rule him out of team’s subsequent series-decider in Sylhet.

As it turns out, Pathirana’s untimely injury now makes him a doubtful starter for the CSK franchise in their initial few games of the forthcoming IPL 2024 season.

CSK’s injury woes worsen with Pathirana setback

Matheesha Pathirana bowled just 3.4 overs against Bangladesh in the second T20I on March 6 before he walked off the field citing injury concerns. The cricketer, slated to represent defending champions CSK in IPL 2024, can now miss their initial few games of the tournament.

An IPL source recently stated that the CSK team management is unsure of Pathirana’s availability for IPL 2024’s first few matches at the moment, considering a Grade 1 hamstring strain takes nearly two weeks to fully recover. Moreover, CSK’s IPL 2024 quest will begin with the opening game itself as they are scheduled to take on RCB on March 22.

Apart from Matheesha Pathirana’s recent injury setback, CSK opener Devon Conway was also ruled out of the first half of the season owing to his thumb strain.

Pathirana made his IPL debut back in 2022, but came to his own during CSK’s triumphant run in IPL 2023 by snaring 19 wickets from just 12 innings for the franchise. The youngster was subsequently retained by the CSK management back in November 2023 during the IPL 2024 retention phase.
