Legendary batter Joe Root has equalled Sir Alastair Cook's tally of the most Test hundreds for England following his magnificent century in the ongoing second Test at Lord's Cricket Ground. The stylish batter achieved the milestone on the first day of the Test match.

Coming at number four, Root bailed England out of trouble with a fighting ton. After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Sri Lanka had an impressive start with the ball, getting the key wickets of Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence and Ollie Pope.

Although Harry Brook contributed 33 runs, his dismissal in the 31st over put Sri Lanka in the driving seat. However, Root kept fighting at one end, forming valuable stands with the in-form Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes.

He eventually brought up his 33rd Test century during the 63rd over of England's innings off Lahiru Kumara's bowling. As the right-arm pacer bowled a good-length ball around the off-stump, Root guided it through the slips for a boundary and complete his ton.

Most Test hundreds for England

  • Alastair Cook - 33
  • Joe Root - 33
  • Kevin Pietersen - 23
  • Ian Bell - 22
  • Geoffrey Boycott - 22

Additionally, Root overtook Australian great Steve Smith, who has 32 hundreds in Test cricket.
