On Monday, August 26, England Cricket released the ODI and T20I squad for the upcoming home series against Australia. There were a few surprises as the Three Lions named five uncapped stars in the T20I squad.

Talking about the squad for the fifty-over format, one big name that was missing from the list was Joe Root. There were questions raised over Root's omission and in the latest events, England's chief selector Luke Wright has broken his silence on the matter.

“We’ve asked a lot of Joe. There’s no reason why he can’t then come into the major tournaments…we know how important Joe is to the England team," Wright said.

It is worth noting that Root had a dismal World Cup 2023, which is why England are looking for more options ahead of the crucial fifty-over event in February 2025.

Update On Ben Stokes

England's red-ball skipper Ben Stokes is currently out of action because of the hamstring injury he sustained during The Hundred 2024.

Notably, Stokes had bid adieu to the ODI format a year ago but reversed his decision to play the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Thus, England would be hoping for Stokes to be fully fit as he is also in consideration to feature for the Three Lions in The Champions Trophy 2025.
