In the ongoing clash between India and Sri Lanka at the same venue as the World Cup 2011, Wankhade Stadium, Virat Kohli has registered his 13th 50+ score in the history of ODI World Cups. After struggling in the initial overs, Kohli has looked magnificent.

Sri Lanka tried to keep the Indian batters in check initially and even dismissed the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma in the first over. But even after creating a couple of chances to get Kohli and Gill out, the fielders could not hold onto the catches.

Now that they have spent time in the middle, both Gill and Kohli are inching towards their centuries. Virat Kohli also completed his 1000 international runs this year, this was the eighth time he has crossed the 1000-run mark in international cricket in a year.

With another 50+ score, Virat has surpassed the Sri Lankan southpaw, Kumar Sangakkara.

Here are the other players with the most 50+ scores in ODI World Cups:

  • 21 - Sachin Tendulkar (44 innings)
  • 13 - Virat Kohli (33 innings)
  • 12 - Kumar Sangakkarra (35 innings)
  • 12 - Shakib Al Hasan (35 innings)
  • 12 - Rohit Sharma (24 innings)

Kohli surpasses Sangakkara as he smashes his 13th 50+ score in the ODI World Cups

As Virat had to come early to bat due to the dismissal of Rohit Sharma on the second ball of the innings, he was struggling in the initial overs against Dilshan Madushanka and Dushmantha Chameera. After spending some time in the middle, he was looking great and was smashing boundaries consistently. With this half-century, he surpassed Kumar Sangakkara and won the second spot. Unfortunately, he could not convert this half-century into a hundred and got out on 88.
