Pakistan regained control of the first Test on Day 2 by making amends of their opening day debacle against Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Resuming Pakistan innings at 158-4 on Day 2, overnight batters Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel shared 240 runs together for the fifth wicket to take their team past the 350-run mark. Both Rizwan and Shakeel plundered majestic centuries, with the latter top-scoring in the innings with an unbeaten 171*.

Rizwan’s 239-ball knock was glittered with 11 boundaries and three sixes, while Shakeel laced his 141-run innings with nine elegant boundaries. Their partnership of 240 also marks one of the largest fifth-wicket stands in Pakistan’s Test history.

The 240-run partnership between centurions Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan was eventually halted by Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1-80) at 354-5. Following Shakeel’s dismissal, unbeaten Rizwan marched on with the tail to add nearly 100 runs to the team total.

The wicketkeeper-batter himself smacked a career-best score of 171*, while Agha Salman added 19 from his end. Shaheen Afridi at number eight pummelled a couple of huge sixes as Pakistan declared at 448-6 in 113 overs.

Up against a huge first innings total, Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan collectively survived 12 overs till stumps to take their team to 27-0. Still 421 runs behind Pakistan total, Islam (12*) and Hasan (11*) will resume Bangladesh’s first innings on Day 3.

For Pakistan, ace paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled four wicketless overs while Naseem Shah and fellow fast bowler Khurram Shahzad accounted for the remaining eight overs.
