Sri Lanka's promising pacer Asitha Fernando shone brightly with the ball, as he dismissed England's dangerous batter Ben Duckett in the ongoing first Test between the two sides at Old Trafford in Manchester.

In response to Sri Lanka's first innings total of 236 runs, England had a brisk start, with Duckett and Daniel Lawrence negotiating the Lankan new ball bowlers.

However, Fernando drew the first blood for the visitors, getting rid of Duckett at a crucial juncture of the match.

The incident occurred during the seventh over of England's first innings after they restricted the visitors to a modest total.

In pursuit of a breakthrough, Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva brought Fernando into the attack. His move worked wonders, as the right-arm speedster removed Duckett.

From over the wicket, Fernando bowled a full-length delivery that swung into the southpaw after pitching around the middle and leg stump.

As Duckett attempted for a flick, he was comprehensively beaten by the movement, with the ball hitting him on his front pad. However, despite Lankan players' huge LBW appeal, the umpire declared the Englishman not out.

Sri Lanka challenged the decision, and the TV umpire had to reverse the on-field decision after the hawk-eye confirmed he was gone.

England in a spot of bother in Manchester Test

After dismissing Duckett, Fernando castled stand-in skipper Ollie Pope for six runs. As a result, England were in a spot of bother, placed at 52/2 as of writing. Earlier, Sri Lanka managed a respectable 236-run score, thanks to a blistering cameo from Milan Rathnayake
