Centuries galore at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium as India Women held off their South African counterparts in a high-scoring final-over thriller to seal their three-match series with an ODI to spare.

Mandhana, Harmanpreet hammer centuries in India’s 325

Smriti Mandhana shaped her second successive century and the seventh of her ODI career to top-score in India’s innings against South Africa after the early dismissal of opening partner Shafali Verma (20 from 38 balls). Mandhana’s innings of 136 runs from 120 balls was aided with 18 fluent boundaries and a couple of huge hits, during which she formed a 62-run stand with number three Dayalan Hemalatha (24 off 41 balls) and a 171-run epic with captain and fellow-centurion Harmanpreet Kaur.

After South African spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba curtailed Mandhana’s batting carnage in the 46th over of the innings, captain Harmanpreet ensured Team India added over 50 runs in the final four overs to secure a strong finish. The cricketer himself bludgeoned an unbeaten 103 off 88 balls; and was the chief architect of India’s death-overs batting splurge alongside wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh (25* from 13 balls).

Team India ended up amassing 325-3 at the end of their 50 overs, giving away wickets to only two South African bowlers, i.e., Nonkululeko Mlaba (2-51) and Masabata Klaas (1-67).

Vastrakar holds nerve; tenders Wolvaardt, Kapp tons in vain

South African opener Tazmin Brits became Arundhati Reddy’s maiden ODI wicket, and middle-order batters Anneke Bosch and Sune Luus crumbled in front of Deepti Sharma and Smriti Mandhana as the Proteas slipped to 67-3 in a chase of 326.

Captain and opening batter Laura Wolvaardt, however, kept the ball rolling in South Africa’s favour by sharing a humungous 184-run partnership with all-rounder Marizanne Kapp. Both Wolvaardt (135* at run-a-ball) and Kapp (114 from 94 balls) reached their respective centuries on the high-scoring evening to take their side past the 250-run mark.

However, Kapp mistiming one off Deepti Sharma at 251-4 handed Team India back the momentum, with Pooja Vastrakar’s double-wicket burst in the final over sealing the deal for the hosts with four runs in the bank.

With a 2-0 lead in the three-match series, hosts India will now face the visiting South Africans in the third ODI on June 23 at the same Bengaluru-based venue.
