Indian leg-spinner Asha Sobhana broke down in tears after she received her maiden ODI cap from Team India captain Harmanpreet Kaur at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on June 16.

Playing the first ODI match of her career, the 33-year-old chipped in with four crucial wickets as the ‘Women in Blue’ registered a huge 143-run win to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series against the visiting Proteas.

Harmanpreet Kaur shares encouraging speech for debutant Sobhana

Asha Sobhana made her T20I debut for Team India against Bangladesh in May earlier this year. The 33-year-old was also a part of RCB Women’s WPL 2024 winning team under the guidance of Smriti Mandhana.

For her splendid run throughout the WPL 2024 season and her success in Bangladesh, Sobhana also landed her maiden ODI cap in June, through India’s series-opener against the visiting South Africans.

In a video circulating around social media, captain Harmanpreet Kaur can be seen recalling one of her previous camping sessions with Sobhana, claiming that the latter had worked “really hard” and was one of the deserving candidates to earn an Indian cap.

On the cricketing front, Team India trounced their South African counterparts by 143 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

While dashing opener Smriti Mandhana knocked her sixth ODI century through the game, debutant Asha Sobhana broke through South Africa’s lower order line up by picking up the key wickets of Marizanne Kapp, Masabata Klaas and Nonkululeko Mlaba to finish with figures of 4-21 from 8.4 overs.

Sobhana will now take field for Team India in the second ODI of their three-match series against South Africa on June 19. The match will also be staged by the same Bengaluru-based venue.
