Sri Lankan bowlers held off Team India to secure a 32-run win in the second ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series at Colombo’s iconic R. Premadasa Stadium.

Here’s the timeline of how SL vs IND panned out in Colombo:

SL vs IND Highlights: Sundar Derails Fernando, Mendis Recovery After Siraj’s Strike

Indian speedster Mohammed Siraj had Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka caught out by wicketkeeper KL Rahul off the first ball of the match. Following the early setback, Avishka Fernando (40 off 62 balls) led Sri Lanka’s fightback with a 74-run partnership with number three Kusal Mendis (30 off 42 balls).

With Fernando and Mendis settling at the crease, visiting spinner Washington Sundar removed both in quick succession as Sri Lanka slipped to 79-3 in 18.1 overs.

SL vs IND Highlights: Kamindu Mendis Takes SL To 240 After India’s Spin Brilliance

Indian spinners Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav bagged regular wickets to keep derailing Sri Lanka’s run-scoring charge in the middle overs. While Sundar finished with figures of 3-30 from his 10 overs, Kuldeep seized 2-33 from his spell. Axar Patel also dismissed Sri Lanka’s well-set number four Sadeera Samarawickrama during the middle stages of the innings.

For Sri Lanka, captain Charith Asalanka punched out 25 runs from 42 balls, while number seven Dunith Wellalage added a handy 39 to his team’s total. Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 40 off 44 balls before he was run out by Shreyas Iyer to take Sri Lanka to a competitive 240-9 on a turning Colombo surface.

SL vs IND Highlights: India Start Well With Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill

Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill shared a rollicking 97-run stand together in just 13.3 overs. Captain Sharma even notched up a 29-ball half-century on his way to scoring 64 off 44 balls. The legendary Indian opener launched five boundaries and four sixes before an attempted reverse-sweep off Jeffrey Vandersay accounted for his downfall in the 14th over.

Gill pounded 35 runs from his end before becoming Vandersay’s second victim of the evening as India slipped to 116-2 in a chase of 241.

SL vs IND Highlights: Jeffrey Vandersay Scythes Through Indian Middle-Order

After getting rid of both well-set Indian openers, Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay scythed through the visitor’s middle-order with four additional wickets. The 34-year-old cricketer dismissed Shivam Dube, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to finish with career-best ODI figures of 6-33 from 10 overs.

Vandersay’s wicket-taking spree during the middle stages of the run-chase also ensured Team India slipped from 97-0 to 147-6 in the space of just 10 overs.

SL vs IND Highlights: Charith Asalanka Mops Up Indian Tail As SL Secure Big Win

Following Jeffrey Vandersay’s top-order demolishing act, part-time spinner Charith Asalanka mopped up the Indian tail with three quick wickets, including that of well-set Axar Patel (run-a-ball 44).

Asalanka’s three-wicket burst, followed by the runout of Arshdeep Singh helped Sri Lanka envelop India’s entire innings for just 208 to secure a 32-run series-leading win at Colombo.
