In the IND vs SL 2nd ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, a promising start by the Indian openers while chasing a target of 241 quickly unravelled courtesy of a dramatic Indian batting collapse.

The focus, however, was fixed on Axar Patel, who almost steered the ship to safe shores before his efforts were thwarted in a gripping moment that shifted the game's momentum.

Batting at No. 5, he scored a fighting 44 off 44 balls, filled with four boundaries and two sixes. Alongside Washington Sundar, Axar stitched together a vital 38-run partnership after India was reduced to 147/6 and raised visions of a possible Indian revival.

However, just as the tide seemed to be turning, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka stepped in to deliver a masterstroke. In the 34th over, Asalanka, bowling round the wicket, tossed a length ball that deceptively held onto the pitch.

Axar, attempting to punch it off the backfoot, was slightly premature in his stroke. The miscued shot found Asalanka himself, who swooped in for a spectacular low catch, effectively nipping the budding partnership in the bud.

This Axar Patel wicket sent shockwaves through the Indian camp, with Sundar following soon after, trapped in front of the wicket by Asalanka.

Meanwhile, the IND vs SL 2nd ODI, hanging by a thread, now sees India needing 40 runs off 59 balls with only Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj at the crease. 

The duo, known more for their exploits with the ball, are now tasked with an arduous battle to use their bats effectively and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
