Day 1 of the third Test between India and New Zealand belonged to the visitors. Despite losing the toss, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar bagged 9 wickets combined on a turning track to bowl out the Kiwis for 235. While skipper Rohit Sharma recorded another failure, India's unnecessary urgency in the final minutes before stumps cost them three quick wickets in a span of 10 minutes. At stumps on Day 1, India had 86/4 on the board, with 149-run trail.

Here's how IND vs NZ Day 1 panned out in Mumbai

IND vs NZ Day 1 Highlights: Sundar gets his bunny Rachin Ravindra for third time

New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first in extreme heat and humid conditions of Mumbai. Akash Deep’s spell with the new ball was spectacular, and he was rewarded with Devon Conway’s wicket to draw first blood. With a hint of a turn, Rohit Sharma brought in Washington Sundar. A drifter from Sundar beat Latham’s outside edge and crashed into the stumps. The most important wicket of the day was Rachin Ravindra, and Sundar managed to dismiss him for the third time in this series. Just before lunch, Rachin was undone by Sundar’s sharp turn. He went forward to block, but the ball spun around the outside edge to crash into his off-stump.

IND vs NZ Day 1 Highlights: Jadeja strikes twice as Kiwis weather humidity

New Zealand batters struggled with heat in the second session. Daryl Mitchell, drenched in sweat, was being treated after almost 3-4 overs as cramps restricted his movements. However, he battled to score a fighting half-century. On the other end, Ravindra Jadeja broke the 87-run partnership by deceiving Will Young with extra bounce.

Young moved forward to defend, but the late spin clipped the top end of his bat and went straight to Rohit Sharma in slips. In the same over, Jadeja bowled Tom Blundell with an unplayable delivery. The ball hit the deck and spun off the leg stump, leaving Tom cramped on the backfoot defence. He had no time to adjust to the spin and lost his wicket. Jadeja once again struck to dismiss Glenn Phillips just minutes before tea as Kiwis got reduced to 192/6 after two sessions.

Ravindra Jadeja wiped off the tail in the final session to bag a five-wicket-haul as Kiwis were bowled out for 235. Mitchell missed out on his hundred to get dismissed by Sundar on 82 off 129 balls.

In response, India had a stable start before captain Rohit Sharma was undone by Matt Henry. The cutter was ordinary, but it bounced extra off the surface, leaving Rohit cramped. A leading edge landed in safe hands of Tom Latham at second slip, marking another failure for the Indian skipper.

A 50-run partnership for the second wicket nearly helped India recover before Yashasvi Jaiswal was cleaned up by Ajaz Patel in a miserably executed reverse sweep shot. Nightwatchman Siraj was sent back for a golden duck as Ajaz grabbed two back-to-back wickets. The final nail is the coffin was Virat Kohli's unfortunate run out. A suicidal call for single led to India's third wicket in just 10 minutes window. With India reduced to 86/4, stumps were called on Day 1.
