When it comes to Test matches, there might be only a few players currently who can surpass Ravindra Jadeja’s incredible skillset. The 35-year-old once again proved his worth on Friday, that too at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, where India and New Zealand were up against each other on Day 1 of the third and final Test match of the series.
Jadeja began with Will Young's wicket, and followed it with two crucial dismissals of Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips. In the process, Jadeja, in his 77th Test match, went past Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma -- two of India's finest ever fast bowlers' wicket tally in red-ball cricket.
It is important to mention that Ishant and Zaheer played 105 and 92 Tests respectively to claim 311 wickets. Jadeja, on the other hand, crossed their record well before that.
Who Is India's Leading Wicket-Taker In Tests?
Having scalped 619 wickets in 132 matches, Anil Kumble tops the chart among highest-wicket takers for India in Tests. R Ashwin, who has taken 533 wickets in 106 matches, is second in this list. Kapil Dev and Harbhajan Singh follow them, with 434 and 417 wickets respectively, with Jadeja now emerging as the new No. 5.
Bowler | No. Of Tests | Wickets |
---|---|---|
Anil Kumble | 132 | 619 |
R Ashwin | 106 | 533 |
Kapil Dev | 131 | 434 |
Harbhajan Singh | 103 | 417 |
Ravindra Jadeja | 77 | 312 |
It is worth noting that Jadeja's current average (24.07) is the second-best among India's top 10 wicket-takers in Tests. Only Ashwin, who has conceded 23.96 runs per wicket, has a better number than him.
At the time of writing this, New Zealand, who were 159/3 at one point, have now slipped to 194/6. Daryl Mitchell, who is batting on 55*, holds the key, as the Kiwis would love to complete a whitewash against Rohit Sharma and his boys, that too in their own backyard.
