Brief Scores: England (1st innings): 353 all out (104.5 overs) [Joe Root: 122* (274), Ollie Robinson: 58 (96); Ravindra Jadeja 4/67 (32.5), Akash Deep 2/78 (18)] lead India (1st innings): 219-7 (73 overs) [Yashasvi Jaiswal: 73 (117), Shubman Gill: 38 (65); Shoaib Bashir 4/84 (32), Tom Hartley 2/47 (19)] by 134 runs.

England seize firm control over Team India by the conclusion of Day 2 of the fourth Test match between the two sides at Ranchi’s JSCA International Complex Stadium.

Jadeja mops up English tail on second morning

England added over 50 runs to their overnight score on the second morning with centurion Joe Root and tailender Ollie Robinson stretching their unbeaten partnership to 102. Shortley after Robinson shaped his maiden Test fifty, Ravindra Jadeja picked up the final three English wickets on offer in a space of just two overs.

Root remained unbeaten at 122 while Jadeja concluded the first English innings with figures of 4-67. The visitors, who were precariously placed at 112-5 at one stage on Day 1, ended up conjuring 353 by the opening hour of Day 2.

Bashir subdues Jaiswal’s 73 in early ENG advantage

Emboldened by England’s late rebellion with the bat, warhorse speedster James Anderson knocked over Indian captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma for just two with the new-ball. Sharma’s untimely dismissal was followed by a valiant rescue act by in-form opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and number three Shubman Gill.

The two young Indian cricketers shared 82 runs for the second wicket, with Jaiswal top-scoring on the day with 73. Their partnership was broken through by visiting off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who claimed Gill before accounting for the key Indian wickets of Rajat Patidar, Ravindra Jadeja and a well-set Jaiswal.

Bashir’s spin mate Tom Hartley worsened India’s dwindling fortunes by removing Sarfaraz Khan and Ravichandran Ashwin in quick succession, as the hosts fell to 177-7 in the final session of the day.

Fortunately for Indian fans, wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel and tailender Kuldeep Yadav saw off the final hour of the day to take their side to 219-7 by stumps. Team India will resume their second innings on Day 3, another 134 runs behind the Englishmen.
