Delhi Capitals number three batter Alice Capsey pummeled Mumbai Indians’ West Indies import Hayley Matthews with a couple of huge hits in the opening match of the WPL 2024 season.

Turning up for her side in Bengaluru, Capsey made her way into the crease following the early dismissal of Capitals opener Shafali Verma. The 19-year-old cautiously pumped out runs in her initial stages before she swiftly changed gears during the backend of the Delhi Capitals innings.

After Shafali Verma’s early dismissal, number three Alice Capsey shared a 64-run second-wicket recovery stand with captain and opening batter Meg Lanning.

At the start of the 12th over of the innings, Capsey reached 33* from 32 balls and was joined in by middle-order stalwart Jemimah Rodrigues into the crease. Countering Hayley Matthews’ off-breaks, Capsey danced down the track to pummel the West Indies all-rounder for a huge six over long on. A couple of deliveries later in the same over, the Englishwomen replicated her effort to smoke another six, this time tonking an 85-meter hit over the same region. 

Alice Capsey’s twin hits propelled her from a near run-a-ball 33* to a 36-ball half-century.

Alice Capsey packed another six and a few more boundaries to surge to 75 runs off just 53 balls. Her belligerent effort was halted by Mumbai Indians’ New Zealand-based all-rounder Amelia Kerr in the 18th over of the Delhi Capitals innings.

The following over, Jemimah Rodrigues also made her way back to the sheds with a 24-ball 42 to her name. Regardless, their collective efforts ensured the Delhi Capitals blazed past the 170-run mark by the time of their 20 overs.
