India A’s young opener Ayush Mhatre impressed everyone with a confident and composed knock of 65 off 76 balls vs South Africa A. This happened on Day 2 of the first unofficial Test held at the BCCI CoE ground in Bengaluru.
In response to South Africa A’s total of 309, India A needed a solid start, and Mhatre delivered just that.
Walking out to open with Sai Sudharsan, the Mumbai youngster looked calm and positive right from the first ball.
Ayush Mhatre steals the show in the India A vs South Africa A game
He showed excellent timing on both sides of the wicket and didn’t let the South African bowlers settle into a rhythm.
While wickets often fall early in unfamiliar conditions, Ayush Mhatre looked completely at ease. He put a prize on his wicket despite being inexperienced and reaped the rewards of his hard work.
Mhatre took on the loose deliveries with confidence, finding the boundary ten times in his short but impactful innings. He reached his half-century in no time before Prenelan Subrayen dismissed him on 65 off 76 balls in the 22nd over.
Regardless, his partnership of 90 runs for the opening wicket with Sai Sudharsan gave India A the perfect foundation after South Africa A posted a competitive first-innings total.
By the end of Day 2’s second session, India A reached 92/1, still trailing by 217 runs. Sai Sudharsan (22)* and Devdutt Padikkal (0)* were at the crease, continuing the rebuild started by Ayush Mhatre.
India A to play multi-format series vs South Africa A
The bilateral series between India A and South Africa A will feature 2 unofficial Tests and 3 ODIs. The series is mainly in focus as Rishabh Pant, out with injury since July, is making a comeback.
Not only that, but many future prospects such as Ayush Mhatre, Rajat Patidar, Anshul Kamboj, Devdutt Padikkal and Manav Suthar will be in action.
