For years, Indian cricket has been searching for the next great torchbearer, someone who could take the team forward after the era of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. That wait, it seems, is finally over, as Shubman Gill is no longer the future of Indian cricket but the present.

A new chapter commenced in Indian cricket after Gautam Gambhir assumed the position of head coach, one marked by bold decisions and fresh leadership.

The old guard, including Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin, was cast aside to make way for new blood.

And at the centre of it all stood Gill, who was appointed captain in Tests and ODIs and widely tipped to lead in T20Is soon.

The captaincy transition, interestingly, worked like a magic spell for Shubman Gill. The numbers from 2025 tell the tale as he has scored a total of 1633 runs across formats, the most of any player in 2025, with seven centuries and three fifties in only 34 innings.

In just the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, he scored an unbelievable 754 runs in only ten innings, including four hundreds and a career best knock of 269 runs

However beyond the runs and hundreds, it is his calmness and sense of responsibility that have defined his exceptional year of transition for Indian cricket.

For a 26-year-old, the pressure of leading in multiple formats could have been overwhelming.

But Gill has handled it with the same elegance that defines his batting. Watching him stride out to bat, with that trademark still head and fluid cover drives, feels like watching poetry in motion.

But there’s also steel underneath that elegance now. He’s learnt how to turn starts into big scores, how to grind through tough spells, and how to lead from the front when the chips are down.

Gautam Gambhir’s gamble is paying off to some extent

This transformation didn’t happen overnight. Shubman Gill has had his fair share of ups and downs. As a successor to legends, including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the pressure was enormous.

In addition, his captaincy was also heavily criticised, especially during the Test series against England.

Then came a few low patches, especially in the shorter formats. Yet, Gill did not burn from comparisons or criticism but quietly worked on his game to fine-tune his technique and mental approach.

Gambhir’s arrival seems to have unlocked something in him. The former India opener, with his aggressive mindset and no-nonsense leadership, has wholeheartedly backed Shubman Gill to express himself, both as a batter and a captain.

This season, he’s not just piling on runs, he’s making statements. That 269-run epic earlier in the year was a masterclass in concentration and strokeplay. But what followed, which impressed even more, was his ability to adapt and perform in every condition, from rank turners to seaming tracks abroad.

Can Shubman Gill lead the next generation of Indian cricket?

As India builds toward a new chapter, Shubman Gill stands as the bridge between eras. Yes, he has a long way to go as captain. But that’s the least you expect from a 26-year-old.

On the contrary, as a batter, Gill has the technique of a classical Test player, the aggression of a modern-day stroke-maker, and now, the mindset of a leader.

His teammates respect his calmness and clarity. His fans love his grace. And his opponents, well, they’re learning that once Gill settles in, there’s very little they can do.

The future of Indian cricket is no longer uncertain, it wears a serene smile, wields a flawless straight bat, and answers to the name Shubman Gill.
