When Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Tests, last month, eyebrows were raised as Indian fans expected the new-looked team to struggle in England without their star duo. However, what transpired in the first Test at Headingley was the batting of the highest caliber as the Indian batting stars showed their class and took apart England with ease.
Team India etch name in history books with 5 Test centurions
The conditions in Headingley favoured the batters and India took advantage of it in the first innings as they piled on 471 runs and scored truckloads of runs as the home side was pushed on the backfoot.
The surface got slightly tricky in the second innings but this didn't faze the Indian batters as once again they punished the home team bowlers and moved closer to the safety zone. In their combined two innings, India had 5 individual centuries to their name and they created history with it.
India, for the first time in their rich history had 5 centurions in a single Test match. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant had scored centuries in the first innings and in the second innings, KL Rahul and Pant slammed their respective tons as India had five centuries in the same Test for the first time.
Pant, the man with twin centuries in Headingley Test
Pant etched his name in history books as he slammed his 8th Test century on Monday, and his second in the Test match. After completing the milestone, he became the first Indian keeper and second overall to attain the feat of scoring two tons in the same game.
In the same Test, he also surpassed the former captain, MS Dhoni in a special feat. When he reached the century-mark in the first innings, Pant became the Indian keeper with the most tons in Tests. He now has 8 hundreds, while MSD had 6.
