Hobart Hurricanes snapped Sydney Sixers’ unbeaten run this BBL 2024-25 season with a huge win at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval on January 1. The outcome also marked the third successive win for the Hurricanes as they made a significant leap on the eight-team points table.

Here’s the timeline of how Hurricanes vs Sixers panned out at Hobart:

Hurricanes vs Sixers Highlights: Bird, Kerr Negate Mitchell Owen’s Early Fury

Hobart Hurricanes opener Mitchell Owen carted 33 runs from just 17 balls with four boundaries and two sixes, all inside the first five overs of the match to blaze his team to 45-0.

Aiming to make the most of his raging momentum, Owen was eventually deceived by a slower off-cutter from Hayden Kerr. Matthew Wade and number three Shai Hope were also bested by a couple of slower ones from Jackson Bird as the Hurricanes crashed to 55-3 in 6.4 overs.

Hurricanes vs Sixers Highlights: McDermott And Chaudhary Airlift Hurricanes To 161

Captain Ben McDermott alongside fellow middle-order batter Nikhil Chaudhary played out the next eight overs of the innings to fetch 70 runs for the Hobart Hurricanes.

The two cricketers top-scored for the hosts, with Chaudhary chipping in with a swift 42 off 31 balls while McDermott made a fiery 34 until both were dismissed by Jack Edwards and Jackson Bird respectively.

Bird also had Tim David caught out by wicketkeeper Josh Phillipe to grab his fourth wicket of the day to finish with figures of 4-16 from his four overs. Chris Jordan unfurled some handy runs in the slog overs as Hobart Hurricanes reached a competitive 161-6 by the completion of their innings.

Hurricanes vs Sixers Highlights: Sixers Lose Top Three Within Five Overs

Chasing 162, Sydney Sixers lost each of their top three batters within the first five overs of the innings. Attacking opener and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Phillipe was the first to perish in the run-chase after he failed to read a length ball from Nikhil Chaudhary.

Phillipe’s partner James Vince and number three Kurtis Patterson were both knocked over by Chris Jordan and Waqar Salamkheil respectively in the next two overs as the Sixers slipped to 28-3 just after the opening powerplay.

Hurricanes vs Sixers Highlights: Jordan, Stanlake Dish Out Knockout Punch

Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques crafted a cautious 22 alongside Jordan Silk’s run-a-ball 20 to stitch together 35-run partnership for the fourth wicket. With Henriques losing momentum courtesy of a back-of-a-length delivery from Billy Stanlake, the rest of the Sixers line-up crumbled in front of the mounting required rate as the table-toppers folded up for just 111 in 19.3 overs.

Falling to a 50-run defeat, also their first of the BBL 2024-25 season, Henriques’s mere 22-run effort turned out to be the biggest benefactor of Sixers’ failed run-chase.

For the Hurricanes, Chris Jordan picked up the wickets of a well-set Jordan Silk and that of tailender Jackson Bird, while Stanlake toppled Akeal Hossein to grab figures of 2-22.
