Cracks have started to open up in the Indian dressing room after the shocking loss in the Boxing-Day Test at the MCG. Team India head into the MCG Test with the series evenly poised at 1:1. However, Australia outplayed the Indian team and won the contest with utmost ease to take the lead.
The heavy defeat was put on the shoulders of captain Rohit Sharma, who has been held responsible for the crushing defeat. Now, as per Express Sports, it has been reported that a senior member of the Indian cricket team doesn't believe that the youngsters are ready to take up the captaincy responsibility and is ready to become the interim captain to fix the ongoing issues.
The name of the senior member has not been leaked yet, but speculations have already begun on who the player could be. Rohit's poor form hasn't helped his captaincy cause as the captain missed the first Test in Perth due to the birth of his child, and since then has produced a horrible showing in the next three Tests.
The skipper has only scored 3, 6, 10, 3, and 9 in the five Test innings, Down Under and has come under the scrutiny for his captaincy and batting performance.
Who could be the interim captain if Rohit steps down?
There is one obvious choice for the interim captaincy and that is Jasprit Bumrah. The star pacer led India to their only Test win on this tour and was at his magical best with the leadershop role.
Captaincy doesn't affect his bowling performance and he could be the one to lead India after the SCG Test match. The next interim candidate could be Virat Kohli. He stepped down from the role post the 2021 South Africa series, but till the time the next generation gets ready to take the mantle, Kohli is the perfect candidate.
Under his leadership, India won 40 Test matches and he has been India's most successful Test captain.
