Perth Scorchers cantered themselves to an easy win over hosts Adelaide Strikers at the Adelaide Oval in match number 17 of the BBL 2024-25 season. While Cooper Connolly and Finn Allen headlined Scorchers’ run-chase, fast bowlers Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff restricted the Strikers to a moderate total upfront.

Perth Scorchers fast bowlers Lance Morris and Jason Behrendorff wrecked Strikers’ top-order ambitions with three quick wickets, all inside the first six overs. Morris landed the opening breakthrough for the visitors by getting rid of Ollie Pope for just a single.

Seasoned paceman Behrendorff removed Chris Lynn and Jake Weatherald in the space of two overs as the Strikers slipped to a sluggish 30-3 at one stage after being put into bat first. Andrew Tye accounted for a well-set D’Arcy Short at 34-4, while new ball expert Jhye Richardson picked up three quick ones, including that of hosts captain Alex Ross, in his return spell to claim figures of 3-29 from his four overs.

Morris returned to topple Henry Thornton as the Adelaide Strikers reached a troublesome 58-8 around the halfway stage of the innings.

Adelaide Strikers number nine and 10, Brendon Doggett and Cameron Boyce led their team’s miracle recovery with a striking 84-run partnership for the ninth wicket from just 58 balls.

The two cricketers sparked remarkable backend cameos to blaze Strikers to a competitive 142-8 by the completion of their 20 overs. Doggett top-scored in the innings by cracking an unbeaten 47 off 39 balls with five boundaries and two sixes, while Boyce made 29* off 22 deliveries with three boundaries and a maximum.

Adelaide Strikers fast bowler Henry Thornton picked up two wickets in the first over of his new ball spell and the second overall of the Perth Scorchers run-chase. Making good use of short-pitched deliveries, the speedster got rid of opener Matty Hurst and number three Aaron Hardie as the Scorchers crashed to 5-2 in two overs.

Opening batter Finn Allen led Perth Scorchers’ swift recovery with an attacking half-century from just 23 balls. Launching four boundaries and three sixes in his blazing knock, the New Zealander was eventually knocked over by Brendon Doggett at 89-3 in nine overs.

Cooper Connolly and captain Ashton Turner shrugged off the remaining 57 runs with ease to take Perth Scorchers to an emphatic seven-wicket win in just 14.3 overs. Connolly made 48* from 35 balls with three boundaries and a couple of maximums, while captain Turner led his team with an 18-ball 35*.

Recording their third win of the season, the Perth Scorchers rose to number two spot on the BBL 2024-25 points table.
