A long-standing List A record of Yashasvi Jaiswal was broken by a fellow Mumbai batting prodigy. In Australia, Perth Scorchers’ pace quartet consigned hosts Adelaide Strikers to a huge defeat at the Adelaide Oval. Also, as per reports, Indian heavyweights Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as well as Jasprit Bumrah will likely be rested from India’s upcoming ODI series against England.

To sign off the year 2024, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, December 31.

Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma Likely To Be Rested For ENG ODIs

According to recent reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will likely rest Indian captain Rohit Sharma, batting legend Virat Kohli and premier speedster Jasprit Bumrah from the upcoming home ODI series against England. The three senior Indian cricketers are currently in Australia for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against the hosts.

The impending series against England marks India’s final set of ODI fixtures prior to the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who announced their retirements from T20I cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup in June, have not played a single ODI match since India’s tour of Sri Lanka in July and August earlier this year.

Perth Scorchers Wallop Strikers After Pacer’s Brilliance

Perth Scorchers mowed down Adelaide Strikers’ 142-8 with seven wickets and 33 balls to spare in match number 17 of the BBL 2024-25 season at the Adelaide Oval. Batting first, the Strikers crashed to 58-8 at one stage before tailenders Brendan Doggett (47* off 29) and Cameron Boyce (29* off 22) conjured a record BBL stand for the ninth wicket.

For the Scorchers, fast bowlers Jhye Richardson (3-29), Jason Behrendorff (2-14), Lance Morris (2-19) and Andrew Tye (1-46) picked up eight wickets between them within the first 11 overs of the match. Chasing 143, Scorchers opener Finn Allen blazed his way to a 23-ball half-century before Cooper Connolly anchored the rest of the pursuit with 48* from 35 balls.

Ayush Mhatre Tops Yashasvi Jaiswal For Huge List A Record

Mumbai’s young batting sensation Ayush Mhatre mounted 181 runs from just 117 balls against Nagaland in a Group C match of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The 17-year-old smeared 15 boundaries and 11 sixes in his raging knock, and helped Mumbai cart 403-7 from their 50 overs.

Through the course of his batting blitzkrieg, Ayush Mhatre also became the youngest player in history to record a 150-plus score in List A cricket. Attaining the feat at an age of just 17 years and 168 days, Mhatre defeated fellow Mumbai batting prodigy Yashasvi Jaiswal, who achieved the record at 17 years and 291 days.

Deepti Sharma, Hayley Matthews Gain Big In ICC Rankings

Indian spinner Deepti Sharma toppled England’s Kate Cross to jump to fifth position on the latest ICC Women’s rankings for bowlers in ODIs. Deepti recently picked up nine wickets during India’s 3-0 ODI series win against the visiting West Indies team. In the third ODI, the 27-year-old claimed match-winning figures of 6-31 in Vadodara. Sharma also retained her spot as the sixth best women’s ODI all-rounder in the world to remain India’s sole entrant in the entire top 20 list.

Among the batters, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews made the biggest jump, gaining six rungs to secure seventh spot on the ICC ODI rankings. South African veterans Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp continue to secure the top spots among batters and all-rounders respectively, while English spinner Sophie Ecclestone is leading the bowling charts with 771 rating points.

Cricket Australia Pick Bumrah Over Cummins As Captain

On New Year’s Eve, Cricket Australia unveiled its Test Team of the Year 2024. Notably, the cricket board excluded national skippper Pat Cummins from the line-up and picked Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah as the captain instead. Cricket Australia named Yashasvi Jaiswal and England’s Ben Duckett as the two openers, and Joe Root, Rachin Ravindra, Harry Brook and Kamindu Mendis as the team’s middle order.

Australia’s very own Alex Carey was designated as the wicketkeeper, while captain Bumrah constituted the pace attack with New Zealand’s Matt Henry and Australia’s Josh Hazlewood. South African star Keshav Maharaj was picked as the sole specialist spinner of the team.
