Before the commencement of Indian Premier League 2025, a large majority of preview articles with respect to Punjab Kings had prioritized Josh Inglis over Priyansh Arya as Prabhsimran Singh’s opening partner. The same wasn’t surprising because Arya was pretty much an unknown commodity.

Four matches into the 18th season of the IPL and Arya’s maiden century has already ensured that he no longer remains an unknown commodity. Going forward, his name will allure a considerable amount of consideration before being sidelined.

Priyansh Arya Has Arrived

If truth be told, the left-handed batter had announced himself on IPL debut. 47 (23) against the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan was an announcement of the highest order. For those who missed it, Arya put on display an unmissable 103 (42) at a strike rate of 245.23.

Arya, who makes six-hitting look effortless, hit seven fours and nine sixes to bring Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium to life.

For a large part, all one could see during an action-packed evening were Arya hitting sixes, PBKS batters getting out and Chennai Super Kings fielders dropping catches. With Punjab desperate to make amends to their record at home, a much-needed victory wouldn’t have been possible without Arya’s counterattack despite wickets falling from the other end.

Priyansh Arya’s Journey Thus Far

There is no hiding to the fact that the inaugural season of the Delhi Premier League was Arya’s claim to fame. Opening the batting for South Delhi Superstars under Ayush Badoni, Arya had amassed over 600 runs including hitting six sixes in an over last year.

What rightly followed was a comeback to Delhi’s squad for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024/25 and Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024/25. Notably, the 24-year-old player had first represented Delhi in List A cricket over three years ago.

In spite of the chances which came his way in the recent years, it was only during the last domestic season that paved way for a star in making. Only Delhi batter to score over 300 runs during their run-up to the semi-finals, what Arya did indirectly was lay the groundwork for an IPL debut.

Son of two schoolteachers in Delhi, Arya has trained under Sanjay Bhardwaj, renowned for coaching the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Amit Mishra and Unmukt Chand. While a lot remains for Arya to be achieved across levels, it seems as if the Dronacharya awardee already has a feather in his cap.
