Indian cricketers who retired from all formats in 2025

The year 2025 turned out to be an emotional phase for Indian cricket fans. Many well-known players decided to step away from the game after giving their best years to the sport. Over time, these cricketers created unforgettable moments for fans and built strong legacies.

After bidding adieu to the T20I format following India’s T20 World Cup win in 2024, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also retired from Test cricket in June 2025, while continuing to play in the ODI format. Notably, along with them, several other players chose to retire completely from professional cricket in the same year.

So, here is a list of Indian cricketers who retired from all formats during 2025.

Varun Aaron

Varun Aaron became the first name on the retirement list in 2025. On January 10, he announced his decision to step away from all representative cricket

Notably, Aaron had already retired from red-ball cricket at the end of the 2023–24 domestic season. Later, he played his final matches for Jharkhand in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His team exited the tournament early, which marked the end of his playing journey.

Aaron finished his career with 88 List A matches and 141 wickets. In T20 cricket, he played 95 games and took 93 wickets. He also featured in the IPL for nine seasons across multiple teams. Notably, his final IPL season ended on a high note when Gujarat Titans won the title. 

Wriddhiman Saha

Wriddhiman Saha retired from all forms of cricket on February 1 after playing his last Ranji Trophy group match. He was widely respected for his wicketkeeping skills and calm presence behind the stumps.

Notably, Saha started his first-class career in 2007 and went on to play 142 matches. During that time, he scored more than 7,000 runs with 14 centuries and 44 half-centuries. His consistency made him a valuable player in domestic cricket.

Earlier, in November 2024, he had already retired from international cricket. Saha last played for India in 2021. In Test cricket, he scored 1,353 runs in 40 matches. Although his batting numbers were solid, his sharp glove work stood out the most. His retirement closed the chapter on one of India’s finest wicketkeepers.

Ravichandran Ashwin

R Ashwin officially ended his professional career in 2025 by retiring from the IPL. He had already stepped away from international cricket in December 2024. His final IPL appearance came with CSK in the 2025 season.

It is worth mentioning that Ashwin played 221 IPL matches and took 187 wickets. More importantly, his impact on Indian cricket went far beyond league cricket. He finished his Test career with 537 wickets, which placed him second among Indian bowlers. In addition, he claimed over 200 wickets across limited-overs formats.

Since his Test debut in 2011, Ashwin delivered several match-winning performances. He also scored six Test centuries. His career ended after the Australia tour in 2024–25.

Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla announced his retirement from all forms of cricket through a heartfelt message on social media. He was part of India’s World Cup-winning squads in 2007 and 2011, which made his career special.

Notably, he represented India in Tests, ODIs, and T20 Internationals, taking 43 wickets overall. His last international match came in 2012.

Chawla played 137 first-class matches and picked up 446 wickets. Across List A and T20 formats, he collected more than 500 wickets. 

Cheteshwar Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket on August 25. He last played for India in the World Test Championship final in 2023. His announcement came through social media.

It is worth mentioninh that Pujara finished as one of India’s top Test run-scorers with 7,195 runs. He played 103 Test matches and was known for his patience and solid defense. His innings often helped India survive tough conditions.

Apart from Tests, he enjoyed success in domestic and limited-overs formats. He also played a role in CSK’s IPL title win in 2021. 

Amit Mishra

Veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra announced his retirement in early September. His career stretched over two decades, which showed his dedication to the game. 

Notably, Mishra played his last international match in 2017. Still, he remained active in domestic cricket and the IPL until 2024. He ended his international career with 156 wickets across formats. His Test debut in 2008 was memorable, as he took five wickets against Australia.

In the IPL, Mishra became one of the most reliable spinners. He took 174 wickets and achieved three hat-tricks with different teams. 

Mohit Sharma

Mohit Sharma announced his retirement in early December 2025. His career included 34 international matches and a long IPL journey. He made his India debut in 2013 and later played in the 2015 World Cup.

Notably, Mohit was known for his control during the penultimate over of a match. He played for several IPL teams and enjoyed a strong season with Gujarat Titans in 2023. Across his IPL career, he took 134 wickets. His final match came earlier in the year before his release ahead of the next auction.

Krishnappa Gowtham

Krishnappa Gowtham was the final name added to the retirement list in 2025. The Karnataka all-rounder ended a domestic career that lasted nearly 15 years. For India, Gowtham has only played one ODI in his short career. 

However, for Karnataka, he finished with close to 400 wickets and nearly 3,000 runs. His best moment came during the 2018-19 season when he played a key role in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win.
