In what comes in as the latest development and shock to the Indian cricket fans, Cheteshwar Pujara has announced retirement from cricket. Known for his gutsy knocks, patience and temperament, Pujara established himself as a key part of the Indian batting line-up.
The rise of India's young generation and the promise shown by them has recently seen the BCCI shift their focus from players like Pujara and Rahane. The fact that he might not be in the plans of the Indian management going down the line has quickened this decision. Notably, the cricketer announced his retirement through a post on his X handle.
Test Career Of Cheteshwar Pujara
Cheteshwar Pujara has represented India in 103 Test matches. In these matches, he scored 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60. The batter had 19 Test centuries under his belt along with 35 half-centuries.
Beyond the numbers, Pujara will be remembered for his fighting attitude. He was probably the last one of the breed of players who still believed in playing Test cricket, the traditional style. Playing with the patience of the bowlers and tiring them to bowl to his strengths is what made Cheteshwar Pujara one of the best batters in the purest format for India.
The Season Of Retirements
Notably, this is the fourth big retirement news for the Indian fans. During the latest edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement.
This was followed by the fall of two stalwarts of modern Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli following a poor run in the Australia tour. Cheteshwar Pujara now joins the list.
India's Wall After Rahul Dravid
When Cheteshwar Pujara first burst into the international scene, his mental fortitude and technical solidity impressed the fans and critics. The fans very quickly named him as the second wall of Indian cricket. A nick name that belonged to Rahul Dravid for his patience, and mental fortitude and technical supremacy.
