England’s young batter Jacob Bethell once again found himself in the spotlight during the fourth Ashes Test vs Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but not for his performance with the bat.

Notably, Bethell was spotted wearing an Ashes Trophy-themed base layer while playing, which quickly caught the attention of fans and cameras during the match.

Jacob Bethell’s on-field appearance comes after recent controversy

This incident comes only days after Bethell was involved in a controversy off the field. Several videos that surfaced on social media showed the young all-rounder vaping and dancing at a nightclub with an unidentified woman.

The clips went viral within hours, and many England fans were unhappy with his behaviour, especially since the team was already struggling in the Ashes series at that time. England were trailing 0-2 when the videos emerged, and supporters felt the players should have been more focused on cricket rather than nightlife.

Notably, England’s Ashes tour of Australia has been nothing short of disappointing. The team has struggled in almost every department, particularly batting. Poor shot selection, lack of discipline, and repeated batting collapses under pressure have hurt their chances.

Although England had a few brief moments where they showed promise, Australia dominated the series overall.

In the ongoing Melbourne Test, England won the toss and chose to bowl first. Their bowlers did a decent job early on, dismissing Australia for just 152 runs. Michael Neser was Australia’s top scorer with 35 runs, while no other batter managed to cross 30. Josh Tongue stood out for England, picking up five wickets while giving away 45 runs.

However, England’s batting once again failed to deliver. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were dismissed cheaply for 5 and 2 runs respectively. Jacob Bethell, playing his first innings of the Ashes series, scored only one run off five balls.

Notably, Harry Brook was the only batter to score more than 40 runs, while captain Ben Stokes was dismissed for 16 off 38 balls.

At the time of writing, England are struggling badly at 91 for nine and still trail by 61 runs, trying desperately to avoid another collapse in a tough Ashes campaign. Jacob Bethell had a forgetful debut in Ashes 2025-26 as he was dismissed for just 1 runs off 5 balls cuaght behind the stumps.
