In a news which came out of nowhere on Wednesday morning, Ravichandran Ashwin retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL), confirming the development with a post on X (formerly on Twitter). The 39-year-old, who re-joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a whopping INR 9.75 crore, made himself unavailable for the upcoming seasons of the cash-rich league.
And Another Gem Retires!
A goldmine found by MS Dhoni, Ashwin began his CSK career way back in IPL 2009. Then a prodigy, he delivered for the Yellow Brigade whenever the stakes were high. With impressive spells one after another, Ashwin helped Chennai win the IPL title in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Champions League T20 (CLT20) in 2010 and 2014.
"Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.
"Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me," Ashwin tweeted.
Ashwin - An All-Time IPL Great!
Over the years, Ashwin played for multiple IPL franchises, including Rising Pune Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, before returning to Chennai, his hometown, for a fairytale second stint. However, his overall season did not go as he had initially planned, having taken seven wickets across nine games with an expensive economy rate of 9.13.
Overall, Ashwin’s IPL numbers are quite impressive, with 187 wickets in 221 matches, and an economy rate of 7.20 speaks volumes. Even though his abilities to deliver with the bat did not reflect in his overall IPL career, the best season came in 2022 while playing under Sanju Samson for the Rajasthan Royals. There, he aggregated 191 runs across 17 games, that too at a brilliant strike rate of 141.48.
Ashwin To Play Overseas Leagues!
However, Ashwin's career at the grandest stages is yet to be over. The veteran all-rounder confirmed that he will now be available to play overseas T20 leagues, such as The Hundred, Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Big Bash League (BBL), among many others.
