Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir faced a lot of flak on social media after he promoted an app selling cryptocurrencies. Crypto is not a legal tender currency in India, and hence, fans trolled Gambhir and accused him of being a bad role model for the youth.

The timing of the advertisement also irked the fans, as India levelled a hard-fought 5-game Test series against England on August 4. The men in blue clinched a narrow 6-run win in the 5th Test at The Oval to avoid a series defeat.

Gautam Gambhir Slammed For Promoting Cryptocurrency

Meanwhile, on August 4 itself, head coach Gautam Gambhir flew back to India. Upon arrival back home, he posted an advertisement for a digital platform selling cryptocurrency.

However, the post didn’t go well with fans. Many users pointed out that crypto is still a risky and unregulated market in India. They felt that someone like Gambhir, now also involved in politics, should avoid promoting such financial products.

Some even called him a "bad role model" for encouraging young people to get into something they may not fully understand. As of now, Gautam Gambhir has not responded to the criticism or issued any clarification.

Gambhir has been under the crossfire for a while now as India struggled to close tight games in the Anderson-Tedulkar trophy. The coach was criticised for questionable team selection and unusual strategies.

Gambhir Reinforces Team-First Mentality After Oval Win

After India’s thrilling six-run victory in the fifth Test at The Oval, head coach Gautam Gambhir once again sent a strong message to critics that this Indian team is about collective success, not individual glory.

"That is going to be the ideology of this Test team, where it won't be about individual-centric, it will be about the team. The way the boys have fought. I've always been a big believer that you should always get what you deserve, not what you want. And I think the guys deserved it," said Gambhir.

Speaking in a BCCI video after the 2-2 series draw in England, Gambhir said the young team stepped up in the absence of seniors like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He affirmed that this team has the talent and temperament to do wonders in the future.
