The Bangladesh cricket team is set to add a couple of fresh chapters to its competitive enmity with continental rivals India. On course to play a series of two Test matches in September 2024, the upcoming venture marks Bangladesh’s first Test assignment in India after a gap of nearly five years.
Celebrating the launch of a brand-new series between the two nations, here at OneCricket, we take a look back at Bangladesh’s previous expedition to India from November 2019.
When Mominul Haque and co. were brutalized in India
The Bangladesh cricket team, under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto, will be facing Team India at Chennai and Kanpur in a two-match Test series between September 19 and October 1. The series also constitutes a part of the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle, as both teams fight for a spot in the finals.
Bangladesh's last tour to India
Back in November 2019, a Bangladesh team led by then-new captain Mominul Haque also travelled to India for a two-match series, one which formed a part of the 2019-21 WTC cycle.
IND vs BAN, 1st Test (2019)
In the first Test match played at Indore’s Holkar Stadium, the visitors batted less than 128 overs across both innings combined and were enveloped for scores of 150 and 213 to crash to a huge innings defeat. For India, speed gun Mohammed Shami hogged the limelight with the ball by collecting a match-haul of 7-58. Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma also collectively claimed seven scalps across both innings of the match, while legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin finished with five.
Mayank Agarwal pounded a career-best 243 during India’s lone innings, which also featured fiery half-centuries from Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja.
IND vs BAN, 2nd Test (2019)
The second Test set out to be a historic Pink-Ball affair between the two nations at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Indian batting legend Virat Kohli lit up the occasion by punching out his 20th Test ton, as he stroked 136 runs from 194 balls with 18 elegant boundaries. While his innings set up India’s 347-9d, bowlers Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav roughed up the Bangladeshi batters with some rip-roaring bouncers on a lively Eden Gardens surface.
Visiting players like Litton Das and Mohammad Mithun even took sickening blows on their helmets while Mahmudullah danced around to the tunes of India’s rampaging pacemen. Ishant Sharma bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award for hauling figures of 9-78 shortly after India clinched a win by an innings and 46 runs. Umesh Yadav also claimed eight from his end while Mohammed Shami seized two as Indian pacers accounted for 19 of the 20 fallen Bangladeshi batters in the match.
So, to sum up Bangladesh’s 2019 Test trip to India, they were battered, they were bruised (literally), and they were consigned to a 2-0 series larruping with innings defeats at Indore and Kolkata.
This time around, Najmul Hossain Shanto and co. will be aiming to overcome their past demons by capitalizing on the newfound winning momentum they recently earned in Pakistan.
