Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has launched a scathing attack on current wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan. Kaneria believes that Rizwan fails to score runs when it matters the most, and cited the cricketer’s recent batting debacle against Team India at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Mohammad Rizwan is currently leading the Markhors team in the ongoing Pakistan Champions One-Day Cup 2024 season.

Kaneria slams Mohammad Rizwan after Pant comparison

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria was recently asked to give his pick between Mohammad Rizwan and India’s stumper Rishabh Pant. Without a second’s hesitation, Kaneria launched a scathing attack on the Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter and “called out” his track record in crunch games.

While speaking on Sports Yaari, the outspoken Pakistan cricketer said:

“He (Mohammad Rizwan) doesn't score runs when it matters, that's the only problem. In the T20 World Cup, when Rizwan was on strike, Rohit Sharma deliberately brought in Jasprit Bumrah into the attack because he knew that he would get him out. It was very obvious.”

Reflecting Rizwan’s performance against India at the 2024 T20 World Cup further in details, Danish Kaneria claimed that the wicketkeeper-batter unnecessarily put pressure on his partners at the non-striker end by failing to score runs against Axar Patel. The ex-spinner chastised the 32-year-old for throwing away his wicket to Jasprit Bumrah even when he was well-settled at the crease. He added:

“How could you sweep the first ball? I mean what is this. You couldn't score runs against Axar Patel, taking singles and doubles and putting pressure on your partner. Then, when you knew that a skipper has brought a fast bowler to get your wicket, you say, 'Here, take my wicket'.”

The match in contention saw Team India pulling off a six-run heist despite defending just 120 runs at New York’s Nassau Stadium. Mohammad Rizwan scored a sluggish 31 off 44 before making his way to the sheds when Pakistan still required 40 runs from the remaining six overs.

Rizwan’s dismissal dried up the runs for Pakistan, as Indian bowlers ran through their overs and glittered them with timely breakthroughs.

Quite recently, Mohammad Rizwan was tipped to become Pakistan captain in place of struggling white-ball skipper Babar Azam by Basit Ali. The former cricketer cited Rizwan’s impeccable track record in the ongoing Champions One-Day Cup behind his reasoning.
