RCB sale bid gets new entrant [Source: @Tan_Cymreig, @RCBTweets/X.com]
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), one of the most popular and valuable teams in the IPL, could soon be sold for a massive price. Reports suggest that the owners of the Hundred franchise Welsh Fire are serious bidders to buy the team.
RCB is closely linked to Virat Kohli, who has been the face of the franchise for years and recently helped guide the team to its first-ever IPL title.
The team was initially bought by billionaire Vijay Mallya but is currently owned by Diageo, a multinational beverage company.
RCB might get new owners soon
Earlier this month, Diageo announced that it had begun a strategic review of its investment in the franchise. This basically means they are considering selling all or part of the team to new owners.
Now, according to The Telegraph UK, The Hundred franchise Welsh Fire is reportedly interested in buying RCB.
Welsh Fire is owned by Glamorgan Cricket Club and Sanjay Govil, who also owns Washington Freedom in the USA’s Major League Cricket.
Both partners hold a 50% share in the team and are looking to expand their presence in global cricket.
According to industry reports, they believe they have the financial strength to make a big bid for RCB if it officially goes up for sale. Notably, Bengaluru could reportedly seek bids at a projected valuation of $2 billion (around ₹16,600 crore).
Why does buying RCB make sense for Welsh Fire?
RCB has always been one of the biggest brands in the IPL. When the league started in 2008, it was the second most expensive team.
Over the years, its massive fanbase, star power, and commercial value have only grown. Two teams joined the IPL in 2021, with Lucknow Super Giants bought for $914 million and Gujarat Titans for $750 million.
Now, with the IPL’s global reach and growing popularity, RCB's value has almost doubled. Neither Welsh Fire nor their representatives have officially confirmed their interest.
But they did state they aim to expand their cricket portfolio and take part in the growing consolidation of global cricket teams.
