In a major development, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise has been officially put up for sale. As per reports, RCB men and women’s team owners Diageo have already initiated the process of selling the stakes of the franchise.

It is worth noting that the RCB men’s team won the IPL 2025 season earlier this year to bag their maiden silverware in the league’s 18-year-long history. Moreover, the Smriti Mandhana-led RCB women’s team also lifted the WPL title, albeit last year.

RCB to have new owners before IPL 2026

Diageo, a UK-based beverage giant that owns the RCB teams in both, the Indian Premier League (IPL) and in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), has officially initiated the process of selling the stakes of the franchise.

The British multinational alcoholic beverage company, headquartered in London, is also confident of completing the sale by March 31, 2026, i.e., prior to the launch of the 2026 edition of the IPL tournament where the RCB men’s team will start out as defending champions.

The fact that the RCB franchise will be put on sale was disclosed to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) by Diageo itself on November 5, as confirmed by Cricbuzz.

In the disclosure, the company said that the United Spirits Ltd (USL), the Indian Subsidiary of Diageo, is initiating a “Strategic Review of the Investment Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd (RCSPL)”.

USL CEO and managing director Praveen Someswar commented that while RCSPL has been a “valuable asset” for the USL so far, it is non-core to their “alcobev” business.

As of now, it remains to be seen which investors or consortiums will step forward to raise the winning bid for the marquee IPL and WPL franchise.
