Rohit Sharma led India to a remarkable victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup final over South Africa. The outcome ended India’s decade-long title quest, and made Sharma only the third World Cup-winning Indian captain after Kapil Dev (1983) and MS Dhoni (2007 and 2011) across all formats.

Rohit Sharma, who endured the disappointment of 2022 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup, celebrated the historic occasion alongside his teammates with much fervor and emotions at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. At one point during the celebration, the Indian skipper even sanctified the 22-yard-strip by eating soil off the playing surface, thus demonstrating his deep connection to the game.

Sharma sanctifies playing surface that brought him glory

A passionate Rohit Sharma celebrated India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win alongside his cohorts at the Kensington Oval with much enthusiasm. At one point during the momentous evening at Barbados, Sharma was spotted breaking away from his teammates to attend the venue’s 22-yard strip.

Interestingly, the Indian skipper sanctified the strip by eating a piece of soil off the playing surface, thus revering the pitch that brought him and his country the ultimate glory.

While Rohit Sharma failed to get going with the bat on the day of the final, his teammate Virat Kohli punched out 76 from 59 balls while all-rounders Axar Patel and Shivam Dube listed sizzling cameos to take India to a competitive 176-7.

Later in the South African chase, Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah took key early wickets before Hardik Pandya came up clutch at the death to ensure a seven-run win and a T20 World Cup title for India.

Remarkably, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their T20I retirements shortly after the game, which also marked the final international appearance for Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach.
