Team India ended its decade-long trophy drought by defeating first-time finalists South Africa at the Kensington Oval to lift the 2024 T20 World Cup.

South African spinner Keshav Maharaj romped through India’s top-order early in the game. Summoned by his captain Aiden Markram to share the new-ball with Marco Jansen, Maharaj got rid of Indian captain Rohit Sharma and number three Rishabh Pant in succession; while Kagiso Rabada had Suryakumar Yadav holed out by Heinrich Klaasen as India slipped to 45-3 at the end of the opening powerplay.

Struggling opener Virat Kohli found form in the final, led India’s recovery by sharing a counterattacking 73-run partnership with experimental number five Axar Patel. While Kohli carved his half-century from 48 deliveries, Patel belted four sixes and a boundary to list 31-ball 47.

The all-rounder was eventually run out by Quinton de Kock at 106-4 in 13.3 overs.

Virat Kohli picked up the pace after reaching his half-century, and ended up making 76 runs from 59 balls with six boundaries and a couple of sixes. All-rounder Shivam Dube also listed a sizzling cameo of 27 from just 16 balls as India raced to 176-7 by the completion of their 20 overs.

India’s new-ball fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh struck early in the South African chase by removing Reeze Hendricks and Aiden Markram respectively at 12-2.

Proteas opener Quinton de Kock (39 off 31 balls), however, punched back with a flurry of boundaries as he shared handy partnerships with Tristan Stubbs (31 off 21 balls) and Heinrich Klaasen.

Following the dismissal of Quinton de Kock to Arshdeep Singh at 106-4, Heinrich Klaasen took the attack to India by blasting five sixes and two boundaries. The hard-hitting radical made 52 from 27 balls, and brought down the South African equation to 30 runs from the remaining five overs.

However, seamer Hardik Pandya (3-20) came up clutch for Team India at the death by dismissing a rampaging Klaasen. The all-rounder also bowled a tight last over to help India secure a seven-run win, and a claim to a historic T20 World Cup title.
