West Indies obliterated a hapless Uganda unit at the Providence Stadium in Guyana in match number 18 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. The outcome marked West Indies’ second win in succession this tournament and helped Rovman Powell and co. join Afghanistan as the only two unbeaten sides from Group C.

Here’s the timeline of how WI vs UGA panned out in Guyana:

WI vs UGA Highlights: King, Charles Set Up 54-Run Powerplay Start For West Indies

After West Indies captain Rovman Powell won the toss and opted to bat first, his openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles launched a fiery start to the innings by reaping 54 runs out of the opening powerplay.

King eventually became the first West Indies wicket to fall on the evening after he failed to read Alpesh Ramjani’s sharp turning delivery at 41-1 in 4.3 overs.

WI vs UGA Highlights: Johnson Charles Top-Scores With A Sluggish 44

Following the dismissal of Brandon King, his opening partner Johnson Charles shared handy partnerships with Nicholas Pooran and captain Rovman Powell to take the West Indies past the 100-run mark in around 12 overs.

While Charles top-scored in the innings with 44 runs, it took him 42 deliveries to do so, thus maintaining a sluggish strike-rate of just 104.76 despite glittering his knock with four boundaries and a couple of sixes. His innings was curtailed Dinesh Nakrani as West Indies reached 105-3 in 12.4 overs.

WI vs UGA Highlights: Rutherford, Russell Pack Fiery Cameos To Take WI To 173-5

Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell made identical 20s to sustain West Indies’ run-scoring momentum in the middle overs.

After captain Powell was deceived by his opposite number Brian Masaba at 125-4, Sherfane Rutherford (22 off 16 balls) and hard-hitting radical Andre Russell (30* off 17 balls) unfurled burgeoning cameos at the death to take West Indies to a competitive 173-5 by the completion of their innings.

WI vs UGA Highlights: Akeil Hosein The Destroyer-In-Chief As Uganda Lose Five In Powerplay

Sharing the new-ball with Romario Shepherd, West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein claimed a wicket each in his first three overs, all within the opening powerplay of the Ugandan run-chase.

Furthermore, Shepherd and Andre Russell also chipped in with a wicket each in their opening spells as Uganda crumbled at 22-5 at the end of the first six overs.

WI vs UGA Highlights: Joseph Takes Two, Hosein Finishes With Career-Best Five-Fer

Akeal Hosein added two more wickets to his tally after the opening powerplay overs to finish with career-best T20I figures of 5-11.

Alzarri Joseph (2-6) and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (1-6) combined to take the final three wickets on offer to envelop Uganda’s entire response for a record-low of 39 to secure a huge 134-run West Indies win.

Remarkably, apart from unbeaten Juma Miyagi (13*), none of the other Ugandan batters managed to outscore Robinson Obuya’s mere six-run effort at number three, considering as many as 10 of their cricketers fell for single-digit scores.
