Shubman Gill might be the number one-ranked ODI batter, but that spot could soon be snatched, as Pakistan's Babar Azam eyes the top position. The India Test captain, Gill, is not scheduled to play any ODI matches before October, and this allows Babar to close the gap, or perhaps, even eclipse the India star.

Currently, Gill has 784 rating points in the ODI rankings, while Babar has 766 points, but the Pakistan star has a golden chance to surpass Gill, and here's how.

Babar eyes Gill's top ODI spot

In the ODI format, Gill will be next seen in action against Australia in October, and this allows Babar Azam to overtake the Indian opening batter. The former Pakistan captain has three ODI matches against the West Indies to make his mark, and he already showcased his class in the first ODI by scoring a gritty 47 off 64 balls.

He still has two more ODIs, and if the right-handed batter scores truckloads of runs in them, there is a good chance that Babar could surpass Shubman Gill, and become the new number one ranked ODI batter. Since the Champions Trophy, Gill has not played a single ODI, while the Pakistan batter has already played a few, and has a couple of ODIs left.

Apart from Gill, and Babar, the other three batters in the top five are Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Daryl Mitchell. Interestingly, just like Gill, Rohit, and Virat won't be in action before October in the ODIs, and this allows even Mitchell to close the gap at the top.

While Rohit has 756 points, Kohli, has 736, and Mitchell sits at 720 points. In February 2025, Gill went past Babar to become the number one ranked ODI batter, but the talented player could lose his spot soon.
