On Wednesday, August 6, the ICC revealed its nominees for the Player Of The Month Award for July. India captain Shubman Gill, South Africa's Wiaan Mulder, and England Captain Ben Stokes are the ones who make the cut for the prestigious monthly award.
All three nominated players dominated the red-ball cricket in the past month as Gill and Stokes went head-to-head against each other in the recently concluded India-England tour. Meanwhile, Wiaan Mulder stole the show during his nation's outing against Zimbabwe.
Let's look at all the historical feats scripted by the nominated players in July.
1. Shubman Gill
The India captain marked his first India tour as red-ball skipper against England. Gill silenced his critics as he amassed 754 runs in six innings, the second-most runs scored by an Indian in a series after Sunil Gavaskar.
Further, Gill averaged 94.50, which included four centuries. Shubman went on to script a plethora of records with his batting in the England tour and earned the player of the series award for his performance.
2. Wiaan Mulder
Wiaan Mulder's South Africa locked horns for a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe. In the second Test, Mulder was asked to captain the side because of Keshav Maharaj's unavailability.
Mulder scripted history as he broke South Africa's record for highest individual Test runs tally, and was on course to slam the highest-ever score in Test cricket, before declaring the innings at 367 to deliberately keep Brian Lara's record intact.
He scored 531 runs across the two matches at an astonishing average of 265.50, including a composed 147 in the second innings of the first Test. Also, Mulder took seven wickets with the ball.
3. Ben Stokes
The England captain was on fire against India as he shone more with the ball than the bat. Stokes took 17 wickets and scored 304 runs with the bat, including a century.
Stokes also delivered while battling injury, which eventually ruled him out of the fifth Test.
Players To Win ICC Monthly Award
Notably, Shubman Gill has won the prestigious award thrice since its inception, and the Indian skipper has the chance to script history by winning it for the fourth time, the most by any player in the history.
Meanwhile, Ben Stokes and Wiaan Mulder are still in search of their first award.
