The BCCI has reportedly zeroed in on possible venues for the WPL 2025 season. Mohammed Shami dropped a major hint regarding his fitness before the 2025 Champions Trophy. Additionally, Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins were nominated for the ‘Player of the Month’ award by the ICC.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, January 7.

WPL 2025 Venues Reportedly Identified

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly shortlisted venues for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 season. The highly-awaited third edition of the tournament is set to launch on February 21 and will run till March 16. As per reports, the BCCI has identified Baroda and Lucknow as two probable venues for the competition

The WPL 2025 season will likely be organized in two different phases, with Baroda emerging as the frontrunner to host the latter phase of the tournament, including the playoffs and the final.

It is worth noting that the WPL 2024 season last year was hosted by Bengaluru and Delhi. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the title and will enter the 2025 edition as the defending champions.

Bumrah, Cummins Shortlisted For Player Of The Month Awards

Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and Australian captain Pat Cummins have been shortlisted for the ICC Player of the Month award for the month of December 2024. Bumrah recently picked up 32 wickets against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test series.

Cummins, on the other hand, snared 17 wickets at an average of 17.64 while leading the Australian cricket team to a 3-1 triumph, their first Border-Gavaskar Trophy title in over a decade.

South African fast bowler Dane Paterson was also nominated in the category for his prolific run against Pakistan at home.

Pakistan Team Docked Of WTC Points For Slow Over-Rate

The Pakistan cricket team was slapped with a fine of 25 percent of its match fees by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shan Masood and co. were also docked five WTC points for maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa during the series-deciding second Test match at Cape Town.

Pakistan lost the match by 10 wickets to concede a 2-0 series victory to the hosts. Falling 421 runs short of South Africa at the halfway stage of the Test, captain Shan Masood led Pakistan’s spirited fightback with a scintillating century in the second innings.

Nonetheless, the docking of five WTC points seems to have made little difference to Pakistan’s prospects, considering the ‘Men in Green’ were already out of contention for a spot in the finals.

Mohammed Shami Hints At Champions Trophy 2025 Return

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami has hinted out at making a potential return to the Indian cricket team in time for the impending 2025 Champions Trophy. Shami, who last played an international match for India back during the 2023 World Cup, was ruled out of his team’s subsequent fixtures owing to an injury. However, Shami made his return to competitive cricket during the 2024-25 domestic season in India.

On January 7, the speedster took to his social media accounts to share a glimpse of his training in the nets. In his explosive post, Shami hinted out a possibility of his return with the caption: “Precision, Pace, and Passion, All Set to Take on the World!”.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Considered For England ODI Series

Rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal will likely be picked in the Indian team for the upcoming ODI series against England at home. The 23-year-old recently finished the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series in Australia as India’s highest run-maker.

It is worth noting that Jaiswal is yet to make his ODI debut for India, and is currently being considered to make a cut into the national squad for next month’s 2025 Champions Trophy.
