Jasprit Bumrah will likely receive a major promotion within the Indian team for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Indian women’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was given a well-deserved rest ahead of the series against Ireland, while Pakistan all-rounder Agha Salman scripted a unique record through his fighting knock against South Africa.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Monday, January 6.
Rishi Dhawan Announces Retirement
India’s forgotten star and Himachal Pradesh veteran Rishi Dhawan has announced his retirement from white-ball cricket. The 34-year-old confirmed the development through a heartfelt Instagram post, shortly after his Vijay Hazare Trophy Group B appearance against Andhra at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai.
Rishi Dhawan played 134 List A and 135 T20 matches during his professional career, including three ODIs and one T20I for the Indian cricket team back in 2016. Dhawan has also played 39 matches in IPL, and was one of the integral members of the Punjab Kings line-up that reached the final of the 2014 edition of the tournament.
Jasprit Bumrah Likely To Miss England Series
Seasoned fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will likely miss India’s upcoming white-ball fixtures against the visiting English cricket team. A couple of days ago, Bumrah opted himself out of the field halfway into the SCG Test against Australia. The cricketer, under visible stress, left the venue to attend a nearby hospital for precautionary scans.
Team India is set to play a series of five T20Is and three ODI matches against England. The series itself serves India’s final set of international fixtures before next month’s 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and in the UAE.
Bumrah To Replace Shubman Gill
Jasprit Bumrah will likely replace Shubman Gill as the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in February. As per a Times of India report, the legendary speedster will be serving as Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the tournament.
Bumrah recently returned with a ‘Player of the Series’ performance from Australia, where he grabbed 32 wickets in five Tests and led Team India to its only win of the tour, at a time when regular skipper Rohit Sharma opted himself out owing to family commitments.
Harmanpreet Rested, Mandhana To Lead In Ireland Series
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled a 15-player squad for the Indian women’s team for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Ireland. Team India is set to face Ireland in three ODI matches between January 10 and January 15 at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.
Regular Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was rested for the series alongside in-form fast bowler Renuka Singh Thakur. In the absence of Harmanpreet, her deputy and prolific opening batter Smriti Mandhana will be leading the ‘Women in Blue’ across the three matches. Star all-rounder Deepti Sharma was named as the new vice-captain, while players like Raghvi Bist and Sayali Satghare received their maiden call-ups to India’s ODI team.
Agha Salman Scripts Rare Pakistan Record
Agha Salman punched out a fighting 48 from 95 balls in the second innings of the Cape Town Test against South Africa. The star all-rounder shared 88 runs with Mohammad Rizwan on Day 4 of the match to help his team take an unlikely lead.
Through the course of his knock, Salman completed 2,000 runs across all international formats, and became only the second Pakistani cricketer who made his debut in the 21st century to achieve a unique all-round double of minting over 2,000 runs and taking 30 or more wickets. Previously, only former cricketer and ex-Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez held the unique milestone.
