Pakistan and setbacks have become inseparable lately. After a heavy defeat in the recently ended two-match Test series against South Africa, another setback has hit them hard. Due to slow over rate in the second Test, they have been fined 25% of their match fees and docked five WTC points.

Another Big Blow For Pakistan

After a a thrilling series win in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, they faced immediate setback in the two-match Test series. After facing a narrow defeat in the first Test match, South Africa crushed them with a massive 10-wicket defeat in the second Test. The blow hits even harder as Pakistan faces a 5-point deduction in the WTC standings, along with a 25% fine on their match fees, adding to their mounting troubles.

In the second Test, Pakistan came up five overs short, even after time allowances, earning them a heavy penalty. Skipper Shan Masood accepted the charge brought by Kumar Dharamasena, Nitin Menon and third umpire Alex Wharf and fourth umpire Stephen Harris.

Pakistan’s over-rate woes in the  WTC cycle of 2023-25 aren’t a new one. In 2023, while facing Australia in the first Test match, they were docked two points. Their second offence recorded in August 2024 while facing Bangladesh on their home soil. In the Rawalpindi Test, they were docked six crucial WTC points.

Pakistan’s Crushing Series Defeat Against Proteas

After thrashing South Africa in the ODIs, Pakistan entered the Test series brimming with confidence, but things went south fast. In the first Test match, their batting lineup crambled and bowlers failed to dominate the South African batting order. The second innings saw a glimmer of hope with Babar Azam’s fifty and Saud Shakeel’s gritty 84. While bowling in the second innings, Mohammad Abbas shined with an exceptional 6-wicket haul but South Africa hammered him with a narrow 2-wicket win.

The second Test was a nightmare for Pakistan, ending in a crushing 10-wicket loss to the Proteas. Bowling first, their attack was steamrolled as South Africa piled up massive 615 runs.

On the flip side, Pakistani batting order faltered in front of South Africa’s bowling. In the second innings, Pakistan’s hope raised with skipper Shan Masood’s mighty 145-run innings. But the rest of the lineup failed to make an impact, leaving South Africa to seal a commanding victory.
