Bangladesh cricket legend Shakib Al Hasan is in dire legal jeopardy after a Dhaka court ordered his assets to be seized due to ongoing charges of fraud. The all-rounder, widely regarded as an icon in Bangladesh cricket, faces charges of issuing bounced cheques totalling over $300,000.

With an incredible career of 71 Tests, 247 ODIs, and 129 T20Is, Shakib has been the backbone of Bangladesh, with 712 international wickets to his name. His off-field issues now risk defining his legacy, though.

His legal woes stem from his alleged ties with former leader Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a student-led uprising last year.

Shakib Al Hasan Embroiled In Fresh Legal Controversy

Shakib Al Hasan, who had once served as a lawmaker in Hasina’s party, has found himself entangled in public scrutiny and multiple investigations.

While he has not been charged with any criminal offences related to the uprising, the fraud allegations have landed him in deep waters.

The Dhaka magistrate court issued a warrant of arrest against him in January 2025, and as Shakib did not turn up in court, the authorities have now taken firm action. The order to seize his assets further escalates the legal battle.

Shakib, now one of the most popular all-rounders in international cricket, has not come back to Bangladesh since the political unrest erupted. He was playing in Canada’s domestic T20 league when Hasina’s government collapsed, and his absence has only fuelled speculation about his future in cricket.

BCB Withholds Shakib’s Salary For Months

Bangladesh cricket’s biggest star, Shakib Al Hasan, has not received his salary for the last four months of 2024, despite being under a central contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

According to a Cricbuzz report, Shakib is owed BDT 48 lakh (approximately USD 38,400 or INR 33 lakh) before taxes. BCB officials admitted the delay, citing the freezing of his bank accounts as the primary reason.
