Digvesh Rathi has a knack of sharing memorable life events with Ayush Badoni. From making both his Delhi Premier League and T20 debuts under Badoni, Rathi is now making his Indian Premier League debut with Badoni also in the Playing XI.
If truth be told, Lucknow Super Giants not only signing but also surprising the opposition by fielding a rookie Delhi player is not uncommon. With Badoni been there, done that, it’s now Rathi’s chance to shine against Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam tonight.
Who Is Digvesh Rathi?
Rathi, 25, is another addition to the ever-growing list of mystery spinners in contemporary cricket. Seeing him from a distance, one could mistake him for former South Africa spinner Imran Tahir primarily due to a similar hairstyle.
The similarities, however, are also with veteran West Indies spinner Sunil Narine. For the unversed, during his run-up, Rathi hides the ball like Narine. For anyone who saw him bowl in the inaugural season of the DPL last year, spotting Badoni at first slip was another commonality. Apart from Narine, Rathi also claims to have learnt a lot from the likes of Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi.
Having plied his trade for eventual runners-up South Delhi Superstarz, the right-arm bowler picked 14 wickets across 10 matches to emerge as the second-highest wicket-taker among spinners.
Another Inexperienced Spinner Handed IPL Debut
Following the likes of Mumbai Indians’ Vignesh Puthur and Capitals’ Vipraj Nigam, Rathi is another inexperienced spinner to have received an IPL debut in the first match of their respective teams this season.
While Puthur made his representative debut against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai last night, Nigam represented Uttar Pradesh across formats for the first time during the recently concluded domestic season. Much like Nigam, even Rathi made his T20 debut during Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024/25.
In two one-sided matches against Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, Rathi picked three wickets at an average of 6.33, an economy rate of 2.71 and a strike rate of 14.
Picked ahead of Manimaran Siddharth, who has been around for over half-a-decade now, Rathi wouldn’t want to waste the opportunity of partnering established spinners such as Bishnoi and Shahbaz Ahmed.
