Bangladesh's star player Shakib Al Hasan has not received his salary for the final four months of 2024, despite being contracted with the team, as confirmed by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials. The delay comes at a time when the board has announced an increase in player salaries and match fees.
Why Has BCB Not Paid Shakib Al Hasan For Four Months?
According to report by Cricbuzz, Shakib is owed BDT 48 lakh (approximately USD 38,400 or INR 33 lakh) before taxes. BCB officials admitted the pending dues but cited frozen bank accounts as the reason behind the delay. It is important to mention that his bank accounts are frozen since November 6, 2023.
“It’s true that he (Shakib) is yet to receive salary for September, October, November and December and that is largely due to the fact his bank account got frozen," an official was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.
The star all-rounder announced his retirement from Test cricket and T20I format last year. Shakib earlier was a sitting Member of Parliament under the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. However, his political career took a dramatic turn as he was implicated in a murder case related to the political unrest following the government’s effective resignation.
Shakib was among the 147 individuals named in the FIR, leading to security concerns that kept him from returning home.
The dynamic all-rounder had initially planned to play his final Test match at home against South Africa but instead announced his retirement from Test and T20I cricket during the Kanpur Test against India in September last year. However, he continued to represent Bangladesh in ODIs, with hopes of securing a place in the Champions Trophy squad. Although, Bangladesh left him out due to concerns over his bowling action.
