The stage is set for the 2025 edition of the Asia Cup in the UAE, and for the first time, eight teams will feature in the continental tournament. It is the 17th edition of the marquee tournament and will be played in the T20 format.
India are the favourites to win the trophy but are likely to face a stiff challenge from some of the other members. One of them is Pakistan, who have won the tournament two times before - 2000 and 2012. Salman Ali Agha is the captain this time around, and Pakistan have been playing the tournament since the inaugural edition in 1984. Thus, in this article, we will look at the list of all Pakistan captains in the Asia Cup.
Moin Khan Took Pakistan To Their First-Ever Asia Cup Title In 2000
In the first-ever edition held in the UAE in 1984, Zaheer Abbas was the captain of Pakistan. No finals were held in that edition, and India were declared the winner at the end of the round-robin stage. In the 1986 Asia Cup, Imran Khan was the captain of Pakistan, and they ended up as runners-up in the tournament held in Pakistan.
In the next edition, held in 1988, Javed Miandad was the captain of Pakistan. They did not participate in the 1990 Asia Cup, while Moin Khan was the captain in the 1995 edition. In the 2004 edition, Inzamam-ul-Haq was the captain of Pakistan, while Shoaib Malik was the designated skipper in the 2008 Asia Cup. For the 2010 Asia Cup, Shahid Afridi took over the leadership duty while Pakistan won their second Asia Cup title in 2012 under the leadership of Misbah-ul-Haq. He led Pakistan again in the 2014 edition, where they finished runners-up.
In 2016, the Asia Cup was played for the first time in the T20 format, and it was Shahid Afridi who led the Men in Green in that edition. In 2018, Sarfaraz Ahmed was the captain of Pakistan, while in 2022, Babar Azam captained Pakistan for the first time in the Asia Cup.
