India’s T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, is ready to lead the Men in Blue into a fresh era. With Rohit Sharma hanging up his boots in the shorter format, all eyes are now on SKY as he gears up for the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE.
But before stepping onto the big stage, the star batter has shed light on the long road back, from diagnosis and surgery to rehab and recovery.
Suryakumar Yadav Ready To Lead India At Asia Cup 2025
In a candid video shared by the BCCI, Suryakumar gave fans a peek into how he fought through his injury troubles and is now raring to go.
Suryakumar revealed that the pain started during the back end of IPL 2025, something that felt eerily familiar to a past injury.
“I'm feeling good right now. It's been five to six weeks. Good process, good routines for the last six weeks and fingers crossed. Feeling really well. It [the sports hernia injury] actually got diagnosed close to the end of IPL. I felt it because I had a similar kind of injury last year as well and that's how I got to know. So few checklists were there. I tried those things and then I realized that it's time to go and do a small MRI,” SKY said.
The scans showed the issue clearly, forcing him to head to Germany for surgery, just like the previous year.
Step By Step Comeback
The right-hander explained that recovery was handled with patience and a simple one-week-at-a-time approach.
“When I did [the scans], [the injury] was very clear in that. I did it post IPL, went to Germany. And it went really well how it went last year. And I knew how the recovery is going to be step by step. So I was prepared for everything. So we took one week at a time. And we are here and I am feeling good,” he added.
From the gym to rehab drills, everything was planned and tailored to how his body responded.
Support From Coaches And Physios
Suryakumar Yadav was quick to credit the staff at NCA and COE for mapping out the perfect recovery plan.
“I think the most important thing for me is when you come here at COE or when I was here at NCA last year as well, they understood how my body reacts to certain situations. So all the strength and conditioning coach and the physios understood how his body works and accordingly they planned all the workouts. It was all instant. As soon as I used to hit the gym and I came here, they would plan the sessions. And that's how we took one week at a time and slowly but steadily we are here,” the Mumbai batter said.
Eyes On The Asia Cup
With the rehab behind him, Suryakumar now sets his sights on Asia Cup 2025. India will kick off their campaign against UAE on September 10 in Dubai, followed by the much-awaited clash against Pakistan on September 14. They will then travel to Abu Dhabi to take on Oman on September 19.
