The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has finally announced the updated date for the inauguration of the Rohit Sharma Stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Initially scheduled for May 13, the event has now been rescheduled to Friday, May 16, at 4 PM IST.

Why The Date Changed?

The change in the inauguration date comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to temporarily suspend the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The decision was made because of rising tensions along the India-Pakistan border.

To ensure safety and manage the situation, the BCCI paused the league for a week. However, with a ceasefire agreement now in place, normalcy is returning, and the IPL is set to resume on May 17 with the RCB vs KKR clash.

During the MCA's 86th Annual General Meeting on April 15, the association decided to honor Rohit Sharma by naming one of Wankhede Stadium's stands after him.

This decision recognizes Rohit as one of Mumbai’s finest cricketers and celebrates his immense contribution to Indian cricket, both as a player and captain.

Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement From Test Cricket

In an unexpected turn of events, just a few days before the inauguration announcement, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7. The news came shortly after reports surfaced about him being removed as the Test captain. At 38, Rohit has been one of India’s most successful Test batters in the latter part of his career, scoring 4,301 runs in 67 matches. He has 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries to his name, with an impressive average of 40.57.

The inauguration event at Wankhede Stadium will be a grand celebration of Rohit Sharma’s cricketing journey.
