In a surprising turn of events, Mumbai Indians are set to replace the outgoing Will Jacks with his English teammate, Jonny Bairstow for the remainder of the season. As per ESPNCricinfo, Jacks, who is set to feature in the England squad for the West Indies series will leave IPL midway and hence, MI made this move.
Why Bairstow replaced Jacks?
Bairstow, last played for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2024 season, and has also represented Sunrises Hyderabad in the previous editions. Jacks was an integral part of the MI starting XI, however, due to the suspension of the IPL, the schedule was altered and it collided with England's series with the Windies.
Hence, Jacks will need to fly back and MI were quick to snap Bairstow as his replacement for the remainder of the season. He will replace him in the knockouts, subject to a NOC from the England board. Jonny Bairstow was unsold in the mega auction last year and also hasn't played for England since June 2024.
Bairstow's IPL career
Bairstow was an integral member of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team when David Warner was the skipper and in-fact, he also has a hundred playing for them. He has played 50 IPL matches, with an average of 34.54 and an impressive strike-rate of 144.45. Last year, he was involved in a record-breaking run-chase against KKR, playing for Punjab Kings.
