In the latest development around IPL 2025, Punjab Kings have roped in Australia legend Ricky Ponting as their new head coach. Ponting will replace Trevor Bayliss, who served as Punjab coach for two seasons.

Punjab Kings took to Twitter to announce Ponting's signing. "𝐏𝐔𝐍TER is 𝐏𝐔𝐍JAB! Official Statement Ricky Ponting joins Punjab Kings as the new Head Coach! "

Earlier in the day, Ricky Ponting was rumoured to join Punjab and the Kings did not waste enough time and put the rumours mill to rest by announcing Ponting's arrival. Interestingly, Punjab teased Ponting's arrival by sharing a cryptic post on Twitter which featured four pictures that resembled Ponting.

Ricky Ponting's Stint With Delhi Capitals

On July 13, 2024, Delhi Capitals announced that they have parted ways with Ricky Ponting. Ponting joined the Delhi-based franchise way back in 2018. Delhi finished bottom of the points table in his debut season in the franchise.

However, things changed for the Capitals in his 2nd season as coach and he helped the side reach the playoffs for three seasons on the bounce, in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Further, under Ricky Ponting, Delhi reached their first ever final but lost to Mumbai Indians in the finals.

Ponting's Will To Join Another Franchise After DC

Before joining Punjab Kings, Ponting had hinted at joining another IPL franchise. He was also rumoured to be joining KKR, but it turned out to be false.

"I'd love to coach again in the IPL. I've had a great time every year that I've been involved, whether that was in the early days as a player or the couple of years I had at Mumbai as head coach there. And then I've had seven seasons at Delhi, which unfortunately didn't really work out the way that I would have wanted and certainly the way that the franchise would have wanted. I think me going there was all about trying to bring some silverware to the team and that didn't happen," Ponting added.
