In the latest development around Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), there are reports that the defending IPL champions are considering ex-Delhi Capitals' coach Ricky Ponting to replace Gautam Gambhir as their mentor.

KKR had a terrific IPL 2024 as they were a force to reckon with under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir and other staff members. However, the three-time winners dealt a heavy blow after Gambhir was appointed as India's head coach. Further, he also brought in his assistant coach at KKR, Abhishek Nayar, to the Indian set-up alongside Ryan Ten Doescate.

Ponting's Impact On Delhi Capitals

It is worth noting that Delhi Capitals parted ways with Ricky Ponting after IPL 2024, following which the Australia legend remarked that he would be open to coaching more teams in the IPL.

Ponting has had a huge influence on the Delhi Capitals. He failed to clinch a title with Delhi but took them to the finals in IPL 2020.

Jacques Kallis In Contention To Join KKR

Besides Ponting, the Sportstak report also mentioned that another legend who is in contention to join KKR ahead of IPL 2025 is Jacques Kallis. Notably, Kallis has earlier represented the franchise as a player and was also a part of the coaching set-up as a batting consultant.

Ever since Gambhir's departure, several names such as Rahul Dravid and Kumar Sangakkara popped up to join KKR. However, Dravid recently penned a deal with Rajasthan Royals to be their head coach. Meanwhile, Sangakkara's chances are still there as he was reported to join England cricket team. Still, with Brendon McCullum joining as England's white-ball coach and Dravid's appointment as RR's head coach, it is likely that Sangakkara too might be on the move.
