In a major breaking, Delhi Capitals and their head coach Ricky Ponting have parted ways ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The talismanic Australian captain is no longer in charge of the franchise, the Capitals confirmed the news on Saturday on social media.

Ponting joined the Delhi-based franchise way back in 2018, when they were known as Delhi Daredevils. However, due to poor results one after another, they came to a mutual decision not to continue any further.

Delhi Capitals' Heartfelt Post For Ricky Ponting

"As you move on as our head coach, we're finding it incredibly hard to put this down in words. The four things you told us about in every huddle - care, commitment, attitude and effort - they sum up our seven summers together. Seven summers of you being hands-on, but also hands-off, so that we could become better. As athletes, yes, but more importantly, as human beings. Seven summers of you reaching every training session first, and leaving last. Seven summers of you sprinting out of the dugout during strategic timeouts, and biting your nails off until there were none left," DC said in a statement on social media.

"Seven summers of your dressing room speeches - the speeches, Oh! (Separate post for that loading) Seven summers of your hugs, shoulder pats and fist pumps for us all - newcomer, superstar... and everyone in-between. Thank you for everything, Coach! Like, you often close out, 'Let's leave this here mate, grab a beer, get back to work tomorrow, yeah?'"

A Close Look At Ricky Ponting's Career At Delhi Capitals

Under Ponting, Delhi finished bottom of the points table in his debut season in the franchise. However, he turned the tide from their on, helping the side reach the playoffs for three seasons on the bounce, in 2019, 2020, and 2021. It included their first-ever final, which they reached under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.

However, Ponting’s Delhi did not carry on the momentum, failing to qualify for the playoffs in the next three years, resulting in them to make the decision.

Nevertheless, Delhi will keep the remaining coaching staff, including the director of cricket Sourav Ganguly, assistant coach Pravin Amre, bowling coach James Hopes, and fielding coach Biju George. Their next head coach, in all likelihood, will be announced soon.
